Small Parts (thyroid, neck, breast and scrotum)
Ultrasound of the thyroid (soft tissue of the neck), breast or scrotum are requested if a suspected lump or mass
or if there is pain in a certain area. Breast ultrasound can be performed on female and male patients.
Your doctor might also request if blood tests of your thyroid functions are abnormal.
Thyroid: To evaluate the size of the thyroid as well as any masses or abnormal growths in the thyroid. Inflammation of the thyroid and lymph nodes in the neck can also be detected.
Breast: Ultrasound detects and assesses masses, cysts and abscess formation in the breasts. (Note: If you over the age of 40 years a mammogram rather than an ultrasound is advised)
Scrotum or testis: Evaluation of the testis, epidermis (sperm cord) and scrotal sac. The ultrasound can detect masses or inflammation as well as abnormal fluid around the testis. Torsion (twisting of the testis) can also be ruled out.
